Joni Mitchell, “Morning Morgantown”
It’s said that Joni Mitchell wrote “Morning Morgantown” after visiting the area, though some folks dispute that.
A little over 30,000 people live in the city, but things change on college football game days when the West Virginia University Mountaineers (WVU) are playing at home. That’s when Morgantown becomes the largest town in West Virginia, thanks to sellout crowds at the 60,000-capacity Mountaineer Field in Milan Puskar Stadium. People come from all over the state and beyond to cheer on the Gold and Blue and sing chilling renditions of “Country Roads” after watching WVU football.
By the way, make sure you say “Gold and Blue” when referring to the Mountaineers and not “Blue and Gold,” because the latter refers to Pitt. That’s WVU’s most hated rival and if you don’t know about the famed Backyard Brawl, you can learn about it via this book by John Antonik.
