Scott Herder and Megan Indoe of Bobo and Chichi are a travel blogging couple who present thoughtful stories, excellent photos, and super creative videos on their website and social media channels. Between Scott’s hyper-lapse photography and still photography and Megan’s writing and networking skills, these two creative minds seem like the perfect match. So let’s dig into who these two people are, what exactly they do, and what lies ahead for the wonderful team at Bobo and Chichi.

People Who Travel: Bobo and Chichi

On Setting Goals and Carving Their Own Life

What is Bobo and Chichi?

First things first. Who’s Bobo and who’s Chichi and how did you come up with that name?

Scott is Bobo, and Megan is Chichi. At the time we were making our blog we were living in South Korea and weren’t sure which direction we were going to go with it at first. We both loved to travel and that ended up just happening naturally. Scott is a huge coffee drinker and before I came out to Korea he bought us these silly coffee mugs and his said Bobo and mine said Chichi.

As everyone knows, naming your blog or business is the toughest part. We both are goofy and drank a lot of coffee over coming up with the name. I made a joke, what if we just called it Bobo & Chichi. Then as the name resonated with both of us we thought it was sort of cute and kind of fit our personality rather than try to come up with a forced, serious name. People giggle at our name, but it sticks out in a sea of blog URLs with the word nomad, wanderlust, and travel in them.

Ouch.

Another funny side story to our name would be when we were in the Philippines for a travel blogging conference. Scott spoke on hyper-lapse photography and after his session, an influential and successful Filipino blogger came up to us and informed us that Bobo meant stupid and Chichi meant boobs. So we were going around the Philippines introducing ourselves as Stupid & Boobs.

Job Title

Scott Herder and Megan Indoe

What would you consider to be your full-time job?

We currently are full-time blogging and doing freelance photography gigs, having been back in the US since our wedding in November of 2016. Since then, we have worked on two commercial hyper-lapse gigs, freelance photography, and some paid writing. Before that, we were teaching English to build a savings net to live off of while we made this transition. We always have been taught to fall back on if we feel our safety net is dwindling down too low or would like to call a place home again for a year in a foreign place!

Workflow

How do you split up work on your website and social media? How do you make it work? Do you make it work?

We are really lucky to have two people to run our website, we admire those who are successful who do it all by themselves! It’s a lot of work! Scott handles almost all of the media including photography, video, and all the editing. He is also the one who fixes anything on the website when it is broken as I do not have the patience! Whereas, I handle the blog, writing, social media, marketing, and pitching my pants off to different tourism boards and brands.

Their Inspiration

Who do you look to for inspiration in the blogging and social media world?

We find inspiration from all over the place. One thing I really admire about Scott is that he is super creative and hardworking. He will see a new style of photography, learn it, and implement it. He will try and try again until it’s right and has incredible patience to self-teach himself all of these methods. I love looking all over the internet at other creatives and blogs and building relationships with those I admire. They have a saying that you should surround yourself with people you want to be like. I find if I surround myself with other creative and hardworking people they end up inspiring me to better myself and my craft.

Future Plans

What’s going on with BoboandChichi.com? Where do you see it going in the future?

Good question! As of right now, we are at a crossroads where we aren’t sure where we are going exactly. We know we will be heavily travel focused and the content will be travel-related, but we have talked about going more towards digital media and less written content for more of a visual storytelling experience for our readers. However, we can’t abandon the content that has made us what we are today, so we are working on figuring out the perfect balance.

Advice and Setting Goals

Any advice you’d have for someone who thinks they can’t have your success?

Figure out what you want and set goals. You can’t expect different results in your life if you’re not willing to make any changes or take any chances. We are constantly setting goals for ourselves, even if we fail or don’t make them on time. We find that if you have something to work towards, big or small you’ll eventually carve the life you want.

Our Thoughts and Yours

I love Megan’s point that you can’t expect your life to change if you’re not able or willing to make changes or try something different. Honestly, I’m inspired by these to go-getters and think I’ll go climb a wall or knock it down. I haven’t decided yet. So while I’m out achieving all my life goals, what do you have to say? I’d first like to say thanks, Scott and Megan. Thank you for providing me with that much-needed kick up the backside from your goal setting mindset and practice!
